  5. QLD AI Summit

On September 20th, we had the privilege of attending the QLD AI Summit 2024, hosted by the Queensland AI Hub. This event brought together over 1,000 participants from diverse backgrounds, including executives, researchers, students, engineers, and professionals across various sectors. The impressive turnout underscores the excitement that AI has sparked within the Australian business community.

With esteemed speakers from renowned organisations like MIT, DeepMind, and Meta, the event offered a broad variety of content for both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Additionally, the networking drinks provided a great opportunity for attendees to reflect on, challenge, and engage with the insights shared throughout the day.

Some key takeaways include:

Unlocking AI’s Potential

  • From healthcare to entertainment, AI is transforming industries by solving complex challenges, such as early stage detection of cancer. Its real-world applications are vast and rapidly growing.

  • For businesses, the key to unlocking AI’s full potential lies in selecting the right use cases—those that tackle meaningful problems and drive measurable impact.

Leverage GenAI, Don’t Compete

    • Don’t focus on competing with LLMs from major tech players, as their rapid advancements will likely outpace your model.

    • Instead, invest in projects that leverage and benefit from the continuous advancements of these models.

    Fine-Tune, Don’t Train From Scratch

    • A company’s data is its primary differentiator when it comes to technology.

    • But training large language models from scratch is expensive and often does not deliver the desired result.

    • Focus on using or fine-tuning pre-trained models, reserving training LLMs from scratch as the last option.

    • After development, selecting the right deployment strategy and maintaining models becomes essential for delivering value.

    AI Research and Innovation

    • The rapid performance growth across GPT versions signals the potential for even greater advancements, possibly reaching AGI by 2030.

    • To stay agile with rapidly evolving GenAI, design applications with a flexible, decoupled architecture. This enables seamless integration of new models without disrupting your system.
