  5. Codex Participates in World Ocean Day Cleanups

This year Codex helped celebrate and honour the ocean by participating in World Ocean Day on 8 June – a collaborative conservation event with participants from more than 150 countries.

Established by the United Nations in 2008 to increase awareness of the impacts humankind is having on the ocean, World Ocean Day provides resources for participants to take action to restore and protect our precious blue planet.

Ocean ecosystems are an essential part of life across the globe, and Australia is famous for having some of the most diverse and remote coastal regions on earth. In directly addressing United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water, World Ocean Day seeks to minimise and reduce the significant adverse impacts of human activity on the ocean, including ocean temperature changes, chemistry make-up, and pollution. Codex is proud to support this initiative and to play a small part in looking after our natural environment.

On June 8th 2023, we assembled a team of eager volunteers at Tarrabora Reserve on the Gold Coast, and Manly Jump Rock in Sydney, to collect shockingly large amounts of rubbish from both these locations, preventing it from ending up in the ocean.

Getting physically involved in making a difference really drove home the importance of reducing waste generation, effectively managing waste, and raising awareness for taking better care of our coastal areas.

The team is already eager to spread our volunteering contributions for World Ocean Day further in 2024!
